Office of the High Commander Oak District Atlantis
Alain closed the holoscreens on his desk, and slipped his own computer into his pocket, then sighed a bit. Okay, so he'd gone over everything, all the things were in order with the rest, but then again he was meeting a new president and since she wasn't military... well he'd never met the lady. Hence his nervousness - this could go rather bad at any time.
"Which reminds me... Anubis!"
He frowned slightly as the AI failed to appear right away, then he grit his teeth slightly
"Dammit I know you heard me you condescending, ill conceived personality map!"
The AI took a perverse delight in messing with people, and Alain wasn't in the mood just then...

Anubis continued, for the most part, to ignore the High Commander for a few moments longer taking pleasure as he monitored the mans blood pressure and vital signs using the internal sensors and ‘watched’ them rise with his frustration and anger. Though like most things this soon lost its entertainment value for him and he decided to fall back on his old favorite… Insults.
“What is it now you pathetic mentally deficient bio-organic puss filled primate?” He growled as his image appeared in the room. He stared down at the young commander and folded his muscular arms in a show of indignation. “Come now, out with it meatbag, I practically run this city and I have little time to deal with your petty whims or cater to your obvious intellectual short comings.” At this the eyes of his Jackal head glowed a menacing green for a moment though all the while a superior smirk played on his canine like lips.

Alain looked up at the self-styled god and smirked slightly
"Bull. Running the city is Aph's job, and thank the gods - not you - that's so or we'd be in deep trouble. Your job is to act as adjutant for the military, which thankfully enough you do the technical stuff right because your skills as an adjutant suck. And please bear in mind I have command level access to your core functions so watch it, big boy"
They'd exchanged insults and threats more than a few times since he became High Commander a year ago, and since it was a fairly regular occurance neither he nor the AI tended to take one another seriously. Which he supposed was a good thing in its own way, at least it kept things interesting.
"God its not until you show up I realize how much I truly miss Kali. And speaking of which, how is the linkup with New Avalon coming? I'd head down there but I have to go meet the new President and see what we're in for for the next four years."

Anubis ignored the humans comments for he knew full well without him the city would have been toast long ago, he also ignored him on the basis that he liked Alain… as much as one could like a pathetic rotting sack of inferior sputum. At least this pathetic rotting sack of inferior sputum had some wit to him unlike the previous men and women who had filled this position. He continued to smirk down at the little man in a superior fashion then turning to a large screen on a wall watched as an image of New Avalon appeared. “The integration process is at 95%; I am running system checks now before we integrate life support and power to Atlantis. Though this would go much faster if that second rate 2 kilobyte cheap trick of an AI you admire so much would relinquish fool control to me, temporarily of coarse, instead of insisting on a joint collaboration.” At this he growled and continued to watch the floating outpost link up with the city circuit by circuit, panel by panel. “Personally I like the idea of the multitudes of pathetic puss filled bipedal organisms on board that floating rust barge dieing in cold darkness, but if you insist on this not happening I would suggest you get to the point concerning why your High Uselessness summoned me here and allow me to get back to my duties.” He now snarled a little more impatiently then before but continued to watch the integration process on the monitor.

"Watch it where Kali is concerned, she's sneaky, you might find you have more trouble bossing her around than you're accustomed to. I thought you'd have learned that after she locked you out of your own system last year"
Alain grinned just a little bit - that had been one of the high points of his time as High Commander - Kali had taken offense to something Anubis said, and somehow snuck into the mainframe and cut Anubis off from half of Oak district. Somehow he got the feeling she'd had Aphrodite's help - that AI was about as perpendicular as far as personality was concerned as it got with Anubis...
"We're not filled with pus, most of it is interstitial fluid, thank you. Pus is dead white blood cells. And I want to remind you that if you dont behave around the president you're a dead series of electronic synapses. She's not military like the last few, so be gentle. Plus I want you to get together with Engineering on the calculations for the new inertial dampeners on the Starfire missile cruisers. Since I know dampener equations are the only ones that can slow you down and shut you up awhile. I'm headed over to Zulimar right now, I'll yell when it's your turn to show up."
The math involved in inertal dampeners was utterly beyond all but a couple human minds, and generally took the full attention of at least one sentient AI unit for several cycles to complete - Alain didnt even like to think about how many numbers that had to involve...

Alain may have gotten a laugh out of Kali’s little prank on him but the human seemed to forget that Anubis had the last laugh with his own sadistic revenge. He continued to smile as he remembered sending an insidious virus designed as a data stream into Kali’s system causing her to feel the virtual equivalent of excruciating migraine like pain and torture until it was eventually tracked back to him and he was ordered to cure it. He knew he had crossed the line that time but it was worth it to get his point across concerning who was still superior.
“You know for a decaying sack of maggot ridden stink expelling primate feces I respect your sadistic streak even if your inventiveness when it comes to torture, or as you would refer to as ‘busy work’ is a little lacking in imagination but what can one expect from the intellectually inept?” He chuckled then turned to look at the commander. “As for the delicate little flower that is our new president… I will treat her like any other talking monkey that considers themselves the superior species and more laughable yet… my superior. Instead of warning me warn her to watch her saliva soaked tongue with me and we will get along fine.” At this he chuckled evilly then disappeared from the room completely to take care of the calculations.

"Pah. I'm not even trying. If I really wanted to mess with you I'd force you to direct-link with Aph and run a full city diagnostic. I know for a fact you have more trouble tolerating her than she does you."
He laughed just a little evilly - Aph wasn't the sort that let people get under her skin, and the way she seemed to find Anubis more amusing than scary always made Alain laugh.
"Humans dont become maggot-ridden until death, get this straight Anubis. And you should remember who built your paraomnipotent ass, too."
He watched the AI fade away again, and sighed slightly, pulling his dress uniform on and working on the buttons for a few moments. He figured he had better at least try the finery for once, make the whole thing seem more official, even if Aph and Althea were going to be there.

Chris walked up to the door to Alain's office and knocked on the door. He awaited a response. He did have to chuckle to himself at the comment Alain had made to Anubis about having him interface with Aph. Way to go. That will drive him up the wall. Chris thought.
Being a part of the TIA has been not so much as a dream but an objective. And now he was the Director of the TIA, Think you overshot your objective a little? he asked himself sarcastically. Then he stood there in silence and waited to be invited into the office by its occupant.

Alain picked his pistol up off the desk - it was still his Recon-issue 5mm HV pistol the same one he had carried since he started in the Marines, and it was still a damn good gun, after all. He slipped that into his belt under the coat, and checked to make sure the rather less standard issue res blade was still strapped to his back. It may have been paranoid to carry one, but Alain had seen enough sleeper agents that he never went anywhere without something to deal with them... plus after so long in spec-ops, he had a hard time not carrying a weapon of some kind.
"Hold on a sec"
He picked his pad back up and walked to the door, finishing buttoning his white and sky blue dress coat, then the door slid open and he smiled slightly.
"Director Hatfield. Hope you don't mind walking and talking, I have a meeting. With the President actually. Care to come along? You have to meet her sooner or later anyways, and it may as well be now when shes already bombarded with introductions... So! I imagine you had something of a more specific purpose in mind, though?"

"Not a problem High Commander. I did not have anything in specific in mind besides meeting you." Chris said. "I see you and Anubis are starting things off delightedly. Don't worry, he is like that with everybody. Including me." He said as he followed Alain to the President's office.

"Oh, I'm well aware of how he is, Hatfield..."
He shook his head a little bit
"After all Ive been in the military long enough, and I have had this job a little over a year now after all."
Alain walked for a ways before he came to one of the transport cars - like trains, almost, but single pods that ran along tubes to various parts of the the city - and opened the door with a few taps on the keypad.
"Express shuttle to the Azul house. Handy."

"My apologies High Commander. I meant no offense. An express shuttle, Very handy indeed." Chris answered. He wondered how the new president would take to his job. He decided to ask, "How do you think the new President will take to the TIA?"

"Offense? No, no, I'm not taking any, don't worry about that. I was just pointing out that I am well aware of his personality malfunctions."
He chuckled a little and sat down, waiting for Hatfield a moment before he started the pod on its way. The question made him pause for a few moments, though, and he shrugged a little bit.
"I don't know, really. Why, are you worried about it? You're a government agency like any other, an its not a new thing, I suppose it all depends on her point of view. Althea seems to think shes not going to judge anyone on preconceptions though, its not like her."

Chris also had to chuckle about Anubis's "personality malfunctions" as Alain had put it. Then hearing his response to Chris's question continued, "It's just that the TIA have been known to do things that aren't exactly...well....textbook. I wanted to make sure that it wasn't going to make her think any less of us. As what we did has saved many lives before in the past."

"It's a war, Chris... we've all done things that aren't textbook or we'd be dead. Much as I hate to say it... that's why you and I have jobs. We do the bad deeds so the civvies don't have to. Anyway like I said, Althea says she'll be fine. Just remember to have a sense of humor."
He chuckled a little then, though
"Of course you werent director at the time but I'm still not sure I'll forgive your agency for telling us that patch of Old Italy was clear. I fell into a freakin Splicer Hive back then. Damn spooks"
He grinned a little to show he was kidding - but if Hatfield had done his homework... that really had happened.
