Terran technology in the 28th century relies heavily on nanotechnology: extraordinarily tiny machines composed of some metals and large amounts of programming, which can be produced to nearly any specification and programmed for nearly any task, limited only by the creativity of the developer. While much nanotech is used in machines and military applications, some of the most important nanotech advancements reside within the very bloodstream of the Terrans themselves.
Medical: All Terrans are injected with the same medical nanomachine implants at the age of five, which grant them immunity to almost all natural diseases and poisons and a greater rate of healing should they be injured. The healing increase is not so great that they heal visibly, but a wound that would have taken weeks to heal in the 20th century can close in days and be fully healed within a weel in many cases. Nanites also provide increased protection against infections and other forms of body intrusion - especially against enemy viral agents. Nanites in the brain also provide communitcation in emergencies, allowing terrans to see holographic communications and the like that remain invisible to attacking enemies. Personal ID and security clearances are also contained on neural nanites, which are accessed by the querying machine automatically.
Military versions of these have increased resistence to unnatural diseases and other biowarfare elements created by the enemy, as well as about a 15% increase in healing speed. Military nanites also have their own communications system, meaning that soldiers can communicate at long ranges without any sort of radio or external device. They do, however, need to be replaced once every five years because of deterioration, unlike civilian nanites, and are programmed to self destruct and kill the host in the case their minds are corrupted by an enemy mutagenic agent. These two things make them both too costly for many people, and the fear that what they have within them has the potential to kill them outright - while irrational, as activation of the protocol means you are already dead - keeps most civilians away. Another deterrent comes from the fact that all Military packages include an emergency tracking beacon that can be remotely activated.
Marine standard enhancement package: All marines are given this set during Basic, which allows their nervous system to link with their armor, and also improves sight, reaction time, and physical toughness by a slight margin - essentially, these nanites prepare Marines for the added strain put on their bodies by entering combat in a suit that is, in fact, far stronger than you. Prior to the use of this package, Marines sometimes injured themselves simply by moving too fast in their armor. Titan pilots receive these as well, to protect them against the sometimes colossal forces involved in their scale of combat.
Air Force standard Enhancement package: Greatly increases reaction time of pilots, though these packages are given only to select groups of pilots with a compatable genetic makeup, to avoid possible complications and mental illnesses, which can result from the modifcations to the nervous system.
Naval Standard Enhancement Package: Naval packages focus almost exclusively on integration with AI units, as many Navy ships are piloted entirely by a group of people all mind linked with one extremely powerful AI unit.
Army Standard Enhancement pack: Much like the Marine pack, but without the AI integration software. general enhanements to most areas.
Special Forces Enhancement Package: Given to the Spec-Ops units of each military branch ((Marine Recon, for instance)), these double or in some cases even triple the effects of the prior military mods. While these have proven perfectly safe, they are also extraordinarily expensive, and only function in about 30% of the population, like the Air Force package, since the neural enhancements can lead to issues in individuals with certain neural makeups.
Civilian packages:
Any of the Military package items that do not involve physical enhancement - i.e. communication, advanced regeneration, and the like - can be purchased separately by civilians.
Nanite packages can also be purchased to do almost anything else you might want, though neural attachment nanites are tightly regulated by the government
OOC note: If you want to make up a new civilian or an expirimental military enhancement, just let me know and I will get back to you, also I will add it here. Nanites are kind of like cell phones are today, people keep finding more things to make them do, so I figure I'll let you make some more of them, haha
