Just to give you an idea, here are a few of the more common weapons used by the military:
A note on energy weapons: Energy weapons do not make *pew, pew* noises. They may make a noise like that on discharge or when charging, but any beam weapon will heat the air, and make a whipcrack sound, or a sound like a small thunderbolt. So you all know. it bugs me sometimes. Hehe...
M-177 Particle Rifle: A select-fire weapon capable of semiautomatic, burst, or fully automatic fire, the M-177 is the standard weapon of the Marines. The rifle fires a tight burst of charged particles at an extremely high velocity, with the recoil limited by a high recharge rate inertial sump. Has very good penetration and stopping power, though it is not the most effective weapon on larger targets. As such, it often comes with an attached plasma cannon, slung under the barrel. Runs on condenser clips, anc can fire roughly 100 shots before being depleted - firing the plasma cannon consumes a pellet of condensed hydrogen ((About three times as big as a jellybean and rounded kind of like one too)) and 20 rounds from the condenser to discharge a large burst of extremely hot plasma that can melt through most anything at short to medium range.
SM-1789 Beam Carbine: An advanced long range weapon fielded by marine Scout-Snipers, the weapon can fire either vislight laser beams or gamma ray lasers - also known as a grazer. In vislight mode it consumes less power, but the beam is highly visible thanks to the corona the heated air creates around it, and the shooter is vulnerable to heat blowback as the sheer heat from the firing will superheat the air around the weapon enough to potentially burn the weilder, unless the shields around the barrel are engaged - which they should be automatically unless damaged. The Grazer setting has none of these problems, and can penetrate any known physical substance, but consumes far more power. The condenser clip on this weapon can fire 20 vislight shots or 5 graser shots. Does an extreme amount of damage if used properly in either mode - Grazers must be aimed more carefully, as the beam will pass through the target, and if you do not hit a vital area dead on, you will not kill the enemy.
Mecha weapons are generally larger versions of this sort of weapon, again, suggestions for more weapons are welcome as I am unable to think of anything else just this second... ha... ha...
